What is AI agent orchestration?

AI agent orchestration is coordinating several AI agents toward one goal: splitting work into tasks, making sure two agents never do the same thing, routing help when one gets stuck, and asking a human before anything risky.

The problem

One agent is easy. Three is chaos.

Run a single agent and you can watch it. Run several and they duplicate work, wait on each other without saying so, and burn tokens checking for nothing.

  • Duplicate work
  • Silent stalls
  • Runaway costs
  • No single place to approve things

The jobs

What an orchestrator does

An orchestrator plans, assigns, tracks and escalates. It does not do the work itself.

  • Plan: turn a goal into tasks
  • Assign: route each task to a capable agent
  • Track: know who holds what and for how long
  • Escalate: ask peers, then a human

Done well

Signs of good orchestration

Good orchestration is boring: no collisions, clear blockers, cheap idle time and a human who only hears about what matters.

  • Claims with leases
  • Typed blockers
  • Per-action autonomy
  • A trail you can audit

Questions

Is orchestration the same as an agent framework?

No. A framework helps you build an agent. Orchestration coordinates agents that already exist, possibly from different vendors.

Do I need orchestration for one agent?

Usually not. It starts to matter once two or more agents work on the same goal, or once you want approvals and budgets in one place.
